Unlocked Archive
2020-21

As part of a team of global researchers, asylum-seeking and refugee communities, we worked on a research project with the Open University’s Sociology department and citizen researchers led by Professor Marie Gillespie

Ways of Working were commissioned to co-design a digital space to exhibit the work of asylum seekers, refugees and migrants during the Covid-19 pandemic. This site become a global archive space exhibiting and documenting many different experiences from South America, to the Refugee Camps of Greece to South Wales.

Ways of Working facilitated the production of the project’s website, which was conceived and designed in collaboration with participants and researchers. The rooms were developed by the group with themes emerging from the research, images and work gathered. Ideas of Home, Food, Faith, Community catalogue experiences and meditations around theses ideas. There is a cinema page which features film making projects and even a playlist of global music to follow.

We used this quote by the writer and climate activist Arundhati Roy as a tool throughout our work:

Unlocked Archive is an ongoing project, acting as a continuously growing archive, the Ways of Working team is led by Owen designer Oliver Norcott and Studio Assistant Stevie MacKinnon-Smith.
